1839-D $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle NGC VF35 (CAC) - One year type coin!

CAC endorsed. 1839-D represents the sole instance of the famous "D" mintmark being on the obverse, and many collectors value the issue as a one-year type emission. CAC has endorsed a total of 19 coins in all grades; 1 in this grade of VF35 with 11 finer. A total of 259 1839-D coins have been seen and encapsulated by both services as of 7/25/19. So simple math reveals a mere 7% pass the CAC test! This was a tough coin to price, since the issue tends to come with an array of problems in every grade encountered. We do have evidence of a CAC F15 realizing $3,335 on 7/18 and then a CAC VF25 OGH realizing $7,200 on 9/18 - all occurring approximately one year ago. We were also informed that our friend and branch mint gold coin expert Doug Winter may have recently offered a VF25 CAC for $5,250.
