Here is an opportunity from AUCM to possess a rare type coin from the early days of America. This Capped Bust dime from 1835, with its classic design and mint state condition, is a relic of American history that you can proudly call your own. It is an excellent example of Variety 2 of the Capped Bust dime (1827-1837), Modified Design. Graded MS63+ (CAC) by PCGS, this rare mint state specimen would be the perfect addition to a type set of United States coins.
Both sides of the Capped Bust dime feature John Reich's classic design. The obverse presents a left-facing Liberty sporting a Phrygian or liberty cap, which during the American and French revolutions came to represent freedom and the pursuit of liberty. It sits atop her head, while a ribbon declaring LIBERTY holds the cap in place. Locks of curly hair fall upon and below her shoulders. Her garment is held together with a clasp. The date is found below Liberty, while 13 stars that represent the 13 colonies/states surround both sides of Liberty at the coin's rim. The reverse features Reich's eagle, with its wings partially spread, while it grasps with its left talon arrows and the olive branch of peace in its right. A federal shield is found upon the eagle's breast, while 10 C. is below our national bird. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the eagle at the rim, while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, found upon a ribbon, floats above the eagle and below the legend.
Even though John Reich's original design was maintained, it was modified ever so slightly by engraver William Kneass. New mint equipment was employed to improve striking quality. The Type 2 Modified Design coins have a beaded border and a uniform circumference.
