1825/4 25C Capped Bust Quarter Dollar, Large Size B-2 NGC MS63 - Rarely offered in mint state!

Here's a great--and very rare--opportunity to acquire this popular issue in the very collectible grade of MS63. For some reason, the 1825/4 B-2 variety in MS63 rarely comes to auction. Research tells us that in MS63 this issue appeared at auction twice in 2010 and once each in 2003 and 2000. These are the most recent auction appearance of the 1825/4 B-2 variety in MS63.

That is curious, for there are 21 graded MS63 by NGC with 28 finer. Plus PCGS has graded 9 in MS63 with 16 finer. Heritage Auctions confirmed this when they wrote in an auction listing (2016) for this issue, "Of the three 1825 overdate varieties, B-2 is the most frequently seen, but its availability in Mint State is nearly nil." Perhaps an intrepid collector has quietly gathered a hoard of them!

The U.S. Mint suspended quarter dollar production for all of 1824 and most of 1825. December of 1825 saw four warrants that totaled 168,000 coins and that significant mintage has afforded numismatist a large supply of 1825-dated quarters. All are overdates, which was the result of 1822 obverse dies that were initially overpunched with  a numeral ' 4.' When demand for additional quarters failed to materialize that year, the dies were repunched yet again with a '5' atop the 4 and 2. The degree to which these underlying numerals are visible has led to some confusion over the years. Current specialists have settled upon the term 1825/2 for the scarce Obverse 1 (B-1) and 1825/4 for the more common B-2 and B-3 marriages, which employed Obverse 2. This piece being offered by AUCM is the more common B-2.
