1823/2 10C Capped Bust Dime, JR-3 Large E's NGC MS65
Here’s a rare gem example of the classic Capped Bust dime. Bedecked with dramatic reddish-golden toning, this piece could be the centerpiece of a type set of U.S. dimes. Gem early dimes are rarely seen, and a specimen of this interesting overdate is certain to attract attention in this grade. NGC has graded only 6 in MS65 with a mere 2 finer. Collectors Universe prices the 1823/2 JR-3 Large E’s at $25,000.00 in MS65.
NGC Coin Explorer writes, “The small number of dimes produced with the date 1822 led to two other 1822-dated dies being leftover and available for 1823's coinage. These were both overdated, with traces of a 2 remaining underneath the 3. They were paired with two reverse dies for a total of three known marriages. The reverse dies are distinguished by having either Large E's or Small E's in the legend …. A fair number of Mint State examples survive for this date, but gems are quite rare.”
