1808/7 50C Capped Bust Half Dollar, O-101 NGC AU55
Here's a collectible, more affordable example of this popular variety in the grade of AU55. NGC has graded 19 as AU55 with 42 finer. This example features an attractive, original golden-peach patina with a ring of russet on both sides. Die cracks are visible on both sides, which is typical for the Overton-101 variety. This piece from the second year of the Capped Bust half dollar series (1807-1836) is well-struck.
Ron Guth writes, "In 1808, mint employees took an old, unused die from 1807, punched an 8 over the 7, and began striking coins. The result is Overton 101, the only overdated die variety of 1808. The overdate is clearly visible, with the serif of the 7 visible on the left side of the top of the final 8; the horizontal bar and diagonal stem of the 7 can be seen inside the 8."
