1806 $5 Draped Bust Half Eagle, Pointed 6, 8X5 Stars PCGS XF40
Very rare variety, so-called the "Pointed 6" as opposed to the "Round 6" or "Round Top 6" for the same year. Rarity-7. This specimen last appeared for sale in the Heritage September Long Beach Sale of 2016, where it was described as "...1806 $5 Pointed 6, 8x5 Stars, BD-5, R.7, XF40 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. This extremely rare die variety shows the 1 in the date completely free of the lowest curl (and lacking its lower-left serif), with a Pointed 6 and the date spaced 1 806 with tall numerals. This is the only Pointed 6 obverse showing the 1 free of the curl (there are four different Pointed 6 obverse dies for the five such varieties). John Dannreuther estimates that only 10 to 12 examples survive of the BD-5, from the estimated original mintage for the variety of 1,200 to 1,500 coins. The surfaces of this piece are bright wheat-gold and have the eye appeal of a higher-grade coin. The strike is a tad weak in the centers. A light scratch on Liberty's cap extends southeast of her nose. A number of parallel slide marks on the reverse high points. The early gold specialist would do well to take a look at this rare issue from Jefferson's second term. Certified in a green-label holder. Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 8931. BUYER's NOTE: our scan of the obverse shows the aforementioned light scratch on Liberty's cap, but does not pick up another scratch in the obverse field coming from Liberty's nose down to 5:00 (nor does the auction catalog description mention it - but it is there.) Priced accordingly.
