1803/2 $5 Draped Bust Half Eagle PCGS MS64+ (CAC) - Rare BD-4 Variety!
If you are a sophisticated collector who demands only the crème de la crème of American numismatic art, then this piece should be at the top of your want list. A razor-sharp strike compliments the appealing greenish-gold coloration on this truly stunning specimen. All 1803 half eagles are 1803/2 overdates.
The mintage of this important instrument of commerce was 33,506. PCGS has graded 2 in MS64+ with 4 finer. In CAC, there are 6 in MS64/64+ with 3 finer. An added perk is that this is the BD-4 variety, a Rarity-4, where we see the 3 touches the bust and the 'T' in LIBERTY is perfect. On the other varieties, BD1 through BD-3, the right foot of the 'T' in Liberty is missing. It is estimated there are about 125-175 examples of the BD-4 variety extant in all grades. Another diagostic of this rare variety is that a die crack travels under the date.
