1802/1 $1 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, BB-234 NGC AU58+
Condition Rarity in the BB-234 variety!
NGC has graded 1 in AU58+ with 8 finer. However, per a listing for this issue from Heritage Auctions of 2020, "According to Stephen Herrman (November 2019), the Condition Census for the B-3, BB-234 1802/1 variety includes one each in MS64, MS63, MS62, and MS61 plus two near-Mint representatives." That makes this specimen a greatly desired one of only six such pieces, and therefore a Condition Rarity!
A diagnosis for the BB-234 variety is a clearly visible die lump in the right field near obverse star 8. On this example, it appears that Lady Liberty is staring at that die lump! Take a look. The 2 in the date is clearly punched over a strong underlying 1. The overdate is quite dramatic, for the '1' is as strongly struck as the '2.' None of the other 1802/1 varieties have the overdate as clearly visible as this, the BB-234. Please see the photo below to confirm that.
