1794 1C Large Cent Head of 1794, S-31 Marred Field PCGS MS67BN (CAC)
A truly remarkable coin! This 1794 Large Cent displays a superb gem quality with a glossy brown obverse and a lighter golden olive reverse. There are faint traces of mint red visible on the reverse within the legend. A few tiny planchet imperfections are present, no doubt as struck. The Sheldon-31 is also known as the "Marred Field" variety due to heavy die chips in the left obverse field behind the hair curls.
This is one of the very FINEST 1794 Large Cents in existence and is certain to satisfy one's desire for the very finest available quality. The finding of even a single 1794 cenit in a low Mint State grade such as MS60 would be a memorable numismatic occasion for anyone yet the present specimen, certified as MS67 by PCGS, has special commanding importance.
Provenance: Acquired in 1999 from Bowers & Merena's Rarities Sale, lot 1020. Prior to this occasion, the coin was in the possession of R.E. Naftzger, Jr. until 2/23/1992. Earlier acquired from Abe Kosoff, C. Douglas Smith and Stacks on 8/14/1957. Originally from England.
Price Relevance: We see a S-59, PCGS MS66+ Brown CAC was offered and sold by Legend Rare Coins Auctions Regency Sale on July 2018 for $246,750. Collectors Universe presently has a published price for a MS67 grade at $250,000.
