1793 1/2C Half Cent Liberty Cap, C-4 PCGS AU55BN (CAC Gold)
Rare One-Year Type. Stunning Example with Gold CAC Sticker!
Ron Guth writes, “The Liberty Cap - Head Left design was used only in 1793 and, along with the 1793 Chain Cents, was one of the first coins struck at the U.S. Mint. Four die varieties, of roughly equal rarity, make up the entire mintage of just over 35,000 pieces. High grade pieces are very rare, as are coins with nice surfaces, perfect planchets, and original, chocolate-brown color. Demand for this date is very high because it is a first and only year of the type.”
This offering from AU Capital Management is a PQ example—and as documented by the rare and valuable Gold CAC sticker—is severely under graded. This piece has the rare “original, chocolate-brown color” that Guth discussed above. Please study the photos of this example carefully and you will see that it has all of the other qualities that Guth discusses.
PCGS has graded only 13 of the Cohen 4, BN. Of those, there is one in AU55 with 3 finer. In CAC, there are only 2 of the Cohen 4, BN, that have been awarded the valuable sticker. This offering from AUCM is the only one with a Gold CAC sticker. None finer have been awarded the CAC sticker.
