1787 New Jersey Copper Colonial, Outlined Shield PCGS MS62BN
Maris 46-e. Ex. Benson Collection, Goldberg Auctions, February 2001, Lot 74. This is a glossy and attraxctive medium brown specimen with some golden highlights on the design elements. It present well - it's a very nice example, free of and significant marks or problems, and certainly finer than Stacks Bowers:23196 (11/15).
The Outlined Shield, and more specifically the Maris 46-e variety, is both fascinating and popular, showing the usually seen heavy clash marks that leave the shield negatively impressed into the obverse fields. THe strike is excellent with all the horizontal shield stripes plain and the horse's mane and snout fully realized.
This is an ideal Type coin as a specimen of this variety would be difficult to improve upon. Population (all varieties) of 8 at PCGS with only 2 finer - both 63's. One of these 63's - the Troy Wiseman M-46e specimen - shows a 60% struck shield. The present example has at least an 80% struck shield. Still, well within the Condition Census.
