Last appearances at public auction (this coin)
April 22, 2009 - Stacks Saint Ludovico and Firth of Clyde Collections, Lot 2876 where it realized $13,000 hammer ($15,600 invoice with buyer's fee).
January 15, 2007 - Stacks George Gund III Collection, Lot 3255 where it realized $12,500 hammer ($15,000 invoice with buyer's fee).
In this sale, it was described as "...GUATEMALA. Carlos III, 1759-1788. 8 Escudos, 1778 NG P. Nueva Guatemala. Armored bust r. Rv. Crowned Arms in Collar of the Golden Fleece. Fr.10, Cayón 12090. Here is a significantly rare Guatemala strike of the standard type for the Gold coinage of this reforming Bourbon monarch. A very bold strike creates splendid overall detail. A glass finds some wispy hairlines. About Uncirculated. (Estimate: 12,000-15,000)"
Hard to determine Fair Market Value for a "repaired" ultra rarity, but we feel half price is reasonable. As a matter of record, the last auction record we've located for a 1778 Guatemala 8 Escudos occurred in January of 2021 where a NGC AU50 brought $12,000. This issue should NOT be confused with the 8 Escudos coins of the same yeear struck at different mints (Mexico, Madrid, Lima, Columbia, Santiago, etc).
