History of Dom John V
Under the reign of Dom John V (Portuguese: João V; 22 October 1689 – 31 July 1750), Portugal’s royal treasury saw a massive income in from its colonies. This allowed him to transform the capital Lisbon into one of the largest cities in Europe. Most of this great wealth was derived through the mining of gold and diamonds in Brazil, Portugal’s colony. The success of these ventures freed him from financial dependence on the Cortes, the national assembly, and increased the already substantial power of the crown.
