This is the finest graded of eight certified by PCGS. It has a population of 1 with none finer.
This is a beautiful example of a classic style European Crown. Note the fine detail rendered throughout the curling coiffure of the Emperor's wig and the reverse arms with only the very highest points of relief. We see deep toning acquired over the centuries throughout with underlying luster still making itself known with strong multi-hued highlights in the peripheries and protected areas. This Thaler is worthy of its high Mint State grade – a near GEM - with no signs of handling to be found and completely original surfaces.

The roots and development of the Thaler-sized silver coin date back to the mid-1400s. As the fifteenth century drew to a close the state of much of Europe's coinage was quite poor because of repeated debasement induced by the costs of continual warfare, and by the incessant centuries-long loss of silver and gold in indirect one-sided trades importing spices and porcelain and silk and other fine cloths and exotic goods from India, Indonesia and the Far East.
This particular Thaler was struck during the brief reign of Joseph I (1678-1711) and was the holy Roman Emperor between 1705-1711.
